Depilatory Creams – How do they Work – Are they Safe

Waxing and using razors are a part of the hair removal process but can only be a teeth clenching experience. Depilatory creams have simplified hair removal, making it a quick and pain free procedure.

How does depilatory cream work?

When applied, the cream breaks down the proteins of the hair also known as the keratin structure. This weakens and dissolves the base of the hair to an extent where the hairs will break off and will be removed when the cream is wiped away. Even though depilatory creams contain alkali chemicals that help to break down the keratin structure, they are really safe to use.

There are a number of such creams that are available and it is important to buy one that does not affect the skin. Hence it is necessary to carry out a patch test to test for sensitivity before buying one.

There are a number of advantages of using depilatory cream over the more traditional waxing and shaving. The first is that the cream dissolves the hair just below the surface unlike shaving which slices through the hair. Thus the area remains stubble free longer. Further, using hair removal creams is easy and a pain free process and can be done in the shower or just before.

The question now is whether depilatory creams are safe for use on any part of the body. The point is to buy a jar of cream according to the area from where hair is to be removed. Eyebrows and the genital areas are very sensitive and hence cream meant for the legs and arms can cause burns and irritation if used on these areas.

It is always advisable to test a small area before applying large amounts. If you want to use hair removal cream on your face buy one that is especially formulated for that area. Follow given instructions on the label and rest assured that all depilatory creams are perfectly safe to use.
